Bio

With architectural education from Delft University of Technology and a Planning Degree from the University of Groningen, both in the Netherlands, Hanno is intrigued by the integration of urban design and architecture.

Hanno has a passion for sustainable design, reuse of architectural elements and the use of natural materials. It is his goal to integrate these pillars of sustainable design in his future work. Through experience in the urban planning field in Calgary, he gained expertise with a wide variety of urban developments, such as affordable housing projects, rezoning work and development permits.

Outside of office hours, you can find Hanno outside on his bike exploring Vancouver Island, playing tennis or on the lookout for wildlife in the ocean.

Tell us about your other degrees or qualifications

During my time at the University of Groningen, I earned certification from the Energy Academy Europe during my Minor in Energy through my Degree in Spatial Planning and Design. I also earned certification in many Esri ArcGIS courses in Spatial Analyses, Cartography, and Geo apps. I have completed the Avalanche Canada AST1 course, as well as Safe Sport Certification from the Coaching Association of Canada.

What other interests within the field of architecture do you have?

I am highly interested in the sustainability and reusability side of architecture and architectural elements. I really believe that making sustainable and unconventional architecture is walking on a fine line to create spaces that people are touched by. This may be done by reusability of modular elements, structural elements or the reusability of buildings instead of demolition. I find these topics intriguing, as I believe that we, as an architecture firm, can make a huge shift in carbon emissions whilst improving the built environment at the same time.

Is there an architecturally significant city you would like to visit?

It would be great to experience the city of Tokyo and other major Japanese cities. I am interested in infill housing developments, wood building techniques and non-western Urbanism. Experiencing Architecture and Urbanism through a different cultural and geographical lens is something that will raise my level of design thinking and perspective to architecture.
